It is extremely difficult to win the lottery. After reading this you will understand why. Winning any Lottery is all about chance and probability (odds).  Here are the odds of winning a prize on the UK Lottery;

What this means

6 of 6 drawn

1: 13,983,816

For each line of 6 numbers played you have an almost 1 in 14 million chance or odds of winning the jackpot in any game.  Put another way, if you played 1 line, 2 times a week, 52 weeks a year you would have to play for over 134 thousand years to play 14 million times. Due to chance there is still no guarantee that your set of 6 numbers will be drawn during the 134 thousand years.  Wow, what’s the point of playing?

4 of 6

If you play 1 line two times a week you will get 4 balls out of 6 one time in just under 10 years.  Two years ago I got 4 out of 6 two times, six weeks apart. This is the effect of chance.

1: 57

If you play 1 line two times a week you will win, on average, about two times a year. Because of chance you may win 4 times in one year and not win at all in another year.

        Overall Odds of a win is 1:54.  This means that, assuming you play on Wednesday and Saturday, you may win two times a year and that these are likely to be the £10 prize.

The above gives an idea of how incredibly difficult it is to win a jackpot in the UK Lottery.  It is even more difficult to win the Euro Millions Lottery. In fact after reading so far you might be tempted to give up playing at all and save your money. But, at least 1 person does win the Jackpot most weeks, often more than one person shares the money.

The odds or probability of winning the Jackpot is a mathematical calculation which any mathematician or statistician can work out.  The mathematical odds or probability will always be true over a very long period of time.  However the affect of ‘chance’ can be used to increase your odds of winning over short periods of time.

 Most people understand that, if you toss a  coin 1 time, the odds of landing head or ‘tails’ side is 50-50 (1:2).  The 50 refers to a 50% odds.  In fact for 1 toss of a coin you can use the word odds or chance interchangeably. Thus there is a 50% chance of the coin landing heads up with1 toss.

Assume that you now stand and watch me toss the coin 5 times and it falls as a head each time.  The chance of the coin falling on the same side each time if you tossed a coin 5 times is much less than if you tossed a coin once.  However, I am sure that you can accept that it is possible to toss a coin 5 times and land as a head each time If I bet you £10 that it would fall as a head a 6th time you would probably not hesitate in accepting the bet because you know that it must fall as a tail as often as it falls as a head over a large number of throws.  Thus the more often it falls as a head with each successive time it is thrown the more likely or more chance it will fall as a tail on the next throw.  The odds of throwing a head or tail in any 1 throw is still 50% (1 in 2).

 This is the clue as to how you can increase the chance of you winning the lottery.   Over a long period the odds or probability will always follow the theoretical or mathematical calculation.  However over a short period of time you can use the idea of chance to increase the likelihood of you winning.  Increasing your chance of winning is based on knowledge of the recent history of the draws over a short time period compared to period required to guarantee a good chance of your numbers being drawn.
