        The UK Lottery (Lotto) has only been going 15 years.  Compare this to the 134 thousand years required to ensure that your set of numbers are likely to have been selected. Even if you were to do 10 lines per week this is still 13 thousand years. Because the lottery has been going for only 15 years you can make effective use of the idea of
chance to increase the likelihood of winning.

In order to apply these ideas you have to analyse past results.  I have analysed all the UK Lotto results since it began in 1994 until November 2006 (the analyses of all results up to May 2009 is underway).

 As of Wednesday 15th November, 2006 there were 1137 six number draws since the lottery began in 1994. From analysing winning lines;

bullet

Winning numbers have never been repeated. Using mathematics it can be shown that the odds of a winning number set being repeated within 1500 draws is less than 1%.  There is a 25% probability after 2,900 draws and a 50% probability after about 4,400 draws.  So it is going to be some time before it becomes likely that a winning number set is drawn for a 2nd time.

bullet

There has been only 49 draws which has included 3 numbers in sequence (3,4,5 for example).

bullet

There has never been a Jackpot win with 4, 5 or 6 consecutive numbers. (It is well known that there are a large number of people who play the number set; 1,2,3,4,5,6.  They are wasting their money).

bullet

1 in every 8 Jackpots are won with 1 as the lowest number. 1 in 9 Jackpots have had 2 as the lowest number. 1 in 11 Jackpots have had 3 or 4 as the lowest number. 1 in every 14 has had 5, 6 or 7 as the lowest number. Only 1 in approximately every 568 jackpots have had 27, 28, 29 or 30 as the lowest number. I expect you are starting to understand the trend.

bullet

No jackpots have ever been won with a lowest number greater than 30 (for example;32, 34, 38, 40, 44 & 49 is extremely unlikely to win).

bullet

Jackpots are rarely won with a highest number less than 32.

bullet

All odd or all even numbers are rare. Occurs in only 2.3% of winning sets

bullet

The sum of most winning sets falls within a more likely total range.  This varies slightly depending what the lowest drawn number is.

 This leads us to a set of rules in order of importance which will definitely increase your chance of winning;

bullet

Do not have a set of numbers which includes consecutive number groups greater than 3 (E.g. 8, 13,14,15,16, 35).  Due to the relatively small number of wins which include 3 consecutive numbers I recommend that you eliminate these also.  Including 2 consecutive numbers is OK (example 1, 13,14, 25, 33, 48) as these occur in Jackpot wins quite often (mathematics calculation gives 45% of the time)

bullet

Do not have a number greater than 30 as your lowest number.  You can increase your chance of winning significantly by ensuring that all your lines have a number lower than 10 as the lowest number.

bullet

In any draw the 2nd lowest number most likely to occur is between 5 and 18, the 3rd most likely between 18 and 28, the 4th between 28 and 33, the 5th most likely between 34 and 43 and the highest number drawn is most like likely between 47 and 49.  From the above a good set of numbers might be 2, 10, 19, 30, 37 and 48 (this set has never won).

bullet

Make sure that your set of numbers has never won the jackpot.  You can do this by checking against all the results on this site (go to Results History)

bullet

Make sure that numbers are not all odd or even

bullet

Add up the total of the balls chosen. Make sure that the total of your chosen numbers falls within the following ranges.  For lowest between 1 & 5, set total should be between 110 and 180.  For lowest between 5 &7, set total should be in range between 115 and 196.

bullet

Do not play using Lucky Dip. You have no control over the numbers you are given. They often break the rules making it very unlikely that you will win.

See my Hot Number Sets for for a table giving the best numbers to pick from.

Here is a set of rules to apply which should ensure that if you win the Jackpot you will share it with as few as people as possible;

bullet

Don't pick numbers based on an arithmetic sequences, such as 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, or 01, 11, 21, 31, 41, 49. People like number patterns - you would be stunned at how many people pick this way every single week.

bullet

Don’t use the ‘Lost’ numbers, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 & 42.  Anyone who has watched the Lost series will know exactly what I mean.  (Although, these numbers have never won the UK lottery.)

bullet

Don't pick numbers given to you by a 'tip' service. Just imagine how many other people will use the same numbers!

bullet

Don't pick numbers purely according to family birthdays. Enormous numbers of lottery players choose the day of the birthday of family members when selecting lottery numbers. But there are only 31 days at most in a month - which means an awful lot of people pick all their numbers in that range.

The easiest, fastest way to pick better lottery numbers, is to pick them totally at random. So pull scraps of paper out of a bag. It won't guarantee NOT picking a 'bad' set of numbers, but at least there's a good chance you won't be sharing your lottery millions with a hundred other 'lucky' winners. (then apply the rules in my tips above).

 All of the above will increase your chance of winning that elusive Jackpot and ensure that it is shared among as few of people as possible.
